Named after a tenacious commander-in-chief of the Texas troops, Sam Houston, Houston City boasts a port that is among the top ports of the United States of America in terms of amount of foreign products handled. Trade may make a big part of Houston’s economy but it is also one of the finest oil and natural gas producers in the world and has been dubbed as the world’s energy capital. Most cities can boast a good business and finance sector but only few can boast a great science and technology sector.
Houston was once called the “Magnolia City” due to its geography and landscape which boasted once natural magnolia forests that were cut down to make way for the growth of the city. The nickname of “Magnolia City” stuck to Houston for quite some time but Houston earned another nickname after the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Now, “Magnolia City” has a new nickname, “The Big Heart”, which was awarded to it due to the Houston’s provision of assistance and resources to those who were affected by the deadly hurricane.
Even with all the business, trade, science, energy; Houston may be forever engraved in the minds of many due to a phrase made popular by space shuttle themed movies. The phrase “Houston we've got a problem.”
